Jim Lipsey started JBL Patent Service Co, in 1984 and was the first patent illustration firms to use CAD to generate patent drawings.  By the time he sold JBL in late 2009, JBL had drawn over 27,000 patent applications for over 400 patent attorneys.  During Jim’s service to the patent industry, he developed knowledge and skills for reducing errors and cost through automation.

Starting in 1995, Jim responded to the need to automate clerical functions that reduced Illustrator billable time.  He built and implemented several automation systems which eventually achieved 95% billable time for his firm.

Jim continued his efficiency drive with the 1999 introduction of a website service for delivering illustrations via a password protected client login system.  Prior to this “first in the business” system, drawings were sent via fax, US Mail and email.  The website service reduced the time for clients to access their informal and formal drawings, plus made all cases available 24/7.

In the mid-2000’s, some of JBL’s patent attorney clients started to use Visio and other software to illustrate their own drawings.  These clients began to experience quality control issues related to complying with USPTO regulations (i.e. minimum size words and numbers, margin requirements, etc.) and in maintaining consistency in figures and reference name & numbers between the written specification and the drawings.  The new powerful software tools made it easier for patent attorney to do more, faster; but the tools also made it easier to make mistakes.  And since the tools were not designed for preparing patents and did not work together, there was no automated way to check for errors.   Making changes to figure numbers, reference numbers and names would mean editing both the specification and the drawings.  Sometimes requiring contacting outside illustrators to make additional changes and delaying the process.

Jim realized that linking the specification to the drawings all within a single document would make it easier for patent attorneys to keep Figures, reference names and numbers consistent throughout the entire specification (including the drawings) and comply with USPTO regulations.  And more to the point, such a system would allow patent attorneys to focus on the claims and not have to spend much time on the clerical functions that are also critical to a high quality and successful patent application.

Also, with the new USPTO rules coming into play, more specifically First-To-File in March 2013, there will be more Provisional Patent Applications being filed to protect priority dates.  Our system will help inventors to more fully disclose their idea in a format that would allow them to file their own provisional patent application or submit it to their attorney(s) for review.  Our system will allow the attorney to more quickly understand the idea and make global edits to the disclosure before filing in the USPTO.  Educated inventors will produce higher quality disclosures and reduce the time for attorneys to review and file both Provisionals and Non-Provisional patent applications.

Jim founded Demonstrare in 2009 to build this efficiency and quality control tool and others needed by the patent industry. Jim has built a team of experienced patent industry and software business experts to design, build and deliver these high quality solutions.
